HEY! YOU’VE GOT MAIL (ages 13+) Session 2
Instructor: Tina Folks

What is mail art? Mail Art or “correspondence art” is an art movement that was started by the late avant-garde artist, Ray Johnson during the 1950’s that took off as a movement in the 1960’s. It’s about exchanging small artworks or objects through the mail within a network of participants.

The enjoyment is not only intended for the recipients and creators, but also meant for postal workers to experience as they handle it. In this mixed media class, we will be creating our own mail art postcards.

In a guided process, we will collage our surfaces using paint, handwriting, used postal materials, alphabet stamps and stencils on matboard. Various tips and tricks will be covered for making several art cards at once. During class, we will also create a “collaborative post card”. In addition to postcards, we will make our own envelopes. Various designs and sizes will be explored using found materials suitable for cutting and folding.

Embellishing techniques will be demonstrated. Students are encouraged to bring papers of their choice. Some card stock will be provided. Afterwards, you may be inspired to join a “mail art exchange”! Materials list is provided following registration.
